The Fourth Joyful Mystery: The Presentation of Our Lord

Understanding the Mystery

The Fourth Joyful Mystery, the Presentation of Our Lord, commemorates the moment when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, as prescribed by Jewish law. This event is described in the Gospel of Luke 2:22-40. It is a moment of profound significance in the life of Jesus and a pivotal event in the Holy Family’s journey.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 529), the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple shows Him to be the firstborn Son who belongs to the Lord. Simeon’s prophecy (Luke 2:29-32) reveals that Jesus is the light of salvation for all people, both Jews and Gentiles. Anna, the prophetess, also recognizes Jesus and speaks of Him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem (Luke 2:36-38).

Biblical Reference

Luke 2:22-32:

"When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, ‘Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord’) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.’ Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And inspired by the Spirit, he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

‘Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel.’"

Catechism of the Catholic Church Reference

CCC 529:

"The presentation of Jesus in the temple shows him to be the firstborn Son who belongs to the Lord. With Simeon and Anna, all Israel awaits its encounter with the Savior—the name given to this event in the Byzantine tradition. Jesus is recognized as the long-expected Messiah, the ‘light to the nations’ and the ‘glory of Israel’, but also ‘a sign that is spoken against’. The sword of sorrow predicted for Mary announces Christ's perfect and unique oblation on the cross that will impart the salvation God had ‘prepared in the presence of all peoples’."
